WWMB – Diversity and Inclusion Chapter
We were delighted to host the Women Who Mean Business event yesterday morning in a very special location at the EPIC Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin city centre.
Our theme for the morning was exploring the area of Diversity and Inclusion in today’s world and we heard from a panel of thought leaders in this space – Mark Fenton – CEO and Founder of MASF Consulting Ltd, Andrea Dermody – D&I Lead, John Clark – Founder of ThinkHRX, Lisa D’Arcy – Global D&I lead of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and our MC Breda McCague, Transformation Specialist at Bank of Ireland and Co-Founder of LeanInIreland.
Diversity and inclusion in the workplace has been a prominent issue for the Irish over the last few centuries. This began through schemes instigated by British imperial governments, encouraging the Irish to move abroad to gain employment so that they could build up their colonies. However, life working abroad didn’t always deliver what was promised. Irish emigrants faced discrimination in places of employment in many different forms and were often relegated to certain professions and areas. We felt the historical stories behind this museum were very relevant for the topic at hand.
D&I can have a dramatic effect on an organisation. From attraction to retention, an inclusive culture that caters for people of all different backgrounds, can promote loyalty, help drive down turnover and lead to higher levels of employee satisfaction.
We were delighted to have a strong representation from a number of companies to name but a few – Ulster bank, AIB, Bank of Ireland, Partner Re, Munich Re, State Street, Citibank and Coca-Cola.

We recently conducted a poll asking MedTech professionals about the ideal duration for Engineers to remain with a company in the MedTech industry 💬
The responses were insightful, with 47% of participants suggesting that 3-5 years is the optimal timeframe ⏳ Interestingly, 27% felt that 1-2 years is sufficient, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.
As the MedTech sector continues to grow, Engineers are seeking diverse experiences across various companies to enhance their skills and broaden their expertise. 🌟

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.
💡 Top sectors: enterprise software (€127M), health (€116M), and fintech (€71.6M).

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Founded by Gerry Clarke and Dr Brendan Boland, the company has now raised more than €22 million in grant and equity financing 📈

The festival will kick off this evening with SHINE – The Concert. Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
