Meet our intern Hugo Dwyer!
Where are you from?
I am from Drogheda but I’m currently living in Dublin and studying in the Dublin Institute of Technology.
Can you tell us a little about your background?
I am a 1st year student of Business & Management in DIT. This was my first internship and my first time working in an office and it has been a great experience.
What interested you most about Mason Alexander when you were looking for an internship?
I was interested in getting experience in Mason Alexander because they are a young company growing at a very fast rate. I was excited to see the work put in that’s necessary to grow a new/young company. My experience here has reinforced the fact that you must work extremely hard in your field to excel. The drive that the employees have here in MA is really inspiring.
What does a typical day at Mason Alexander look like for you?
Every day is a busy day which for me which is great. I format CV’s and upload them to the company’s database. I help research different industries for the consultants. I have had a big role in social media during my internship. I work directly with the office manager in organizing, creating and scheduling content. This has taught me the importance of growing your brand on social media for a company.
Any tips for others who might be thinking about internships?
Don’t hesitate! Dive straight in! I was nervous before starting here in MA thinking whether or not I would actually be a helping hand in the office. I had no idea what work was in store which was a bit worrying. Every employee in Mason Alexander is so nice & accepting. If I ever don’t know how to do anything the employees give me a hand without hesitating. I have learned more than I could have imagined before starting which is great.
What is your favorite part about being an MA intern?
The buzz around the office for sure. I feel the office in Mason Alexander is special in the fact that everyone working here is motivated and enjoys work. This creates a positive atmosphere which is crucial for workers to enjoy themselves while at work.
What was one thing about the recruitment industry that surprised you the most?
Coming into the office, I wasn’t sure what to expect working in a recruitment agency, what I came to learn is that the personal touch is massively important. Pre-screens, interview preps etc. are crucial for the candidate in preparing for his/her role. Meeting each candidate & client individually and getting to know them is really important. I feel this personal touch is what sets Mason Alexander apart from other recruiting firms.
How has your internship shaped your vision for your future career path?
I feel it is still early days for me to be deciding what my career will look like but for definite I will give recruiting a go in the future. I feel I have the personal skills to be a good recruiter. MA has given me a taste for what it takes to produce good recruiters.
Favourite Mason Alexander tradition?
It has to be the morning handshake ritual. Each employee must shake everyone’s hand before starting their day. I feel for me it builds a team spirit among the office – and reinforces that we are all working towards the same goal. Also, I feel it helped me to talk to employee’s who I may not regularly interact with.
What will you miss most at Mason Alexander?
Definitely the employees! Everyone working here in Mason Alexander is great. They accepted me as one of their own so quickly. I will also miss the banter around the office for sure but you never know down the line we may cross paths again in the business world.

We recently conducted a poll asking MedTech professionals about the ideal duration for Engineers to remain with a company in the MedTech industry 💬
The responses were insightful, with 47% of participants suggesting that 3-5 years is the optimal timeframe ⏳ Interestingly, 27% felt that 1-2 years is sufficient, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.
💡 Top sectors: enterprise software (€127M), health (€116M), and fintech (€71.6M).

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
