Meet Business Manager Jenny Kinmonth!

After the success of our third Women Who Mean Business Networking evening, we caught up with Founder and CEO Jenny Kinmonth. Jenny gave us the low down on her background, what life is like for a Business Manager and what words of advice she would give to her younger self.
Where did you grow up? Where do you live?
I grew up in Killiney and am now living in Sandymount. Always at the sea!
What is your background?
I lived & worked in Australia for two years after college. I worked in the revenue department in the Department of Transport. It was a decent job for a sporadic backpacker.
When I returned to Ireland, I had a slight change of industry and did a 3-year stint as an Operations Manager for a CrossFit gym based across Dublin & London.
What do you do at MA?
I joined Mason Alexander as an Office Manager and now work on the operations team as Business Manager. I work closely with the CEO and COO to oversee the day-to-day operations of a busy, growing office. Every day is different as my role entails accounts, managing the marketing team as well as events & facility management. I am also the go-to person when anything breaks – be it an IT issue or the coffee machine, I have accumulated a wide variety of skills!
What did you want to do as a kid growing up?
From a young age, I had wanted to be a housewife! I am satisfied with my crowned title at Mason Alexander as ‘Office Mum’.
Why did you choose to work at MA?
When Mason Alexander approached me about a job in a recruitment agency, my initial thoughts were absolutely not! I knew nothing about the recruitment industry and for some reason, The Wolf of Wall Street was the first thing that came into my mind. When I began to do some research into Mason Alexander, I liked what I had to see. A very social company that focuses a lot of time and energy on employee recognition, from birthdays to employee of the month to regular progression opportunities and promotions.
The reason I stay here? Opportunities for growth. Being part of a start-up culture has provided me with invaluable access to areas of the business that I may never have encountered in previous roles. I was promoted to Business Manager after a year and I am enjoying watching the company grow and succeed.
What does a typical day at work / or work week look like for you?
Working on the operations team, my role is pretty-varied. We recently introduced flexible working hours and a work from home policy which I am finding very beneficial and making the most out of.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
When I first arrived in Australia, I picked up a job as a shower sales person selling $8,000 showers. I lasted 4 hours and left the job without getting paid. I also spent 88 days working on a strawberry farm to get my second-year visa. I like to view it as a character-building experience and I certainly learnt a lot of new skills!!
What’s the best way to start the day?
I find exercising in the morning is good for productivity and a great way to start the day. I cycle to work and / or go to the gym most mornings.
Any tips for people looking for a new job?
Don’t be afraid to use a recruitment agency. They have the knowledge and industry connections to help you with your next career move.
Favourite thing about working at MA?
The people and the opportunities. I enjoy coming to work every day.
Can you recommend any habits that have helped your professional life?
Regular exercise, plenty of sleep and reading. All of which I need to do more of!
What’s one thing that’s coming up in 2019 that you’re excited about?

If you don’t ask you won’t get it / Find your passion and it won’t feel like work / Don’t be afraid of what other people think.
What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with no preparation?
Dogs! Or cheese.
If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?
Maths! I would love to naturally excel at sums without the aid of a calculator!
What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?
Skydive. Special emphasis on the *once. I don’t think I will ever do one again.
Greatest career achievement to date?
I am proud to have set up our Women Who Mean Business network and look forward to seeing it grow.

We recently conducted a poll asking MedTech professionals about the ideal duration for Engineers to remain with a company in the MedTech industry 💬
The responses were insightful, with 47% of participants suggesting that 3-5 years is the optimal timeframe ⏳ Interestingly, 27% felt that 1-2 years is sufficient, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.
💡 Top sectors: enterprise software (€127M), health (€116M), and fintech (€71.6M).

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
