MA Team Tennis Day!

When you have an ex professional tennis player on your team, you can expect to play tennis! Our Head of Mason Alexander Sport, James Cluskey, is a former professional tennis player with 15 professional doubles titles. He also played Davis Cup for Ireland from 2006-2015. He has an extensive network and has coached some of the world’s leading business figures including Sir Richard Branson.
Whilst Mason Alexander hold regular tennis tournaments & networking events for our clients, there have been several requests amongst staff for James to hold a tournament for the staff at Mason Alexander. Last week we headed down to Lansdowne tennis club for a spot of tennis & a barbeque. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather as we finished up early in work and strolled down to the tennis club in the sunshine.
There is no question as to why James has such a great reputation as a coach, he kept his patience and calm dealing with our team who can be a very competitive bunch. (Many at beginners’ level who like to think of themselves as the next Nadal!)
We kicked off with a few fun games such as Around the world and then teams were then paired up into mixed abilities to play an assortment of doubles matches. The tennis was followed by a BBQ & drinks in the sun. The overall winner on the day was Associate Director, Nikki McNally, whilst Manager, Susan Dwyer won a prize for best dressed for the tennis theme!

The responses were insightful, with 47% of participants suggesting that 3-5 years is the optimal timeframe ⏳ Interestingly, 27% felt that 1-2 years is sufficient, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
