How to Hire a Great CFO

As a Headhunter for CFO’s, I enjoy the task of working with boards, CEO’s and investors to recruit game-changing financial officers for their growing companies.
A CFO is unlike any other financial professional. They are more than just an accountant, more than a strategist, more than even a leader; they are a sign that your business is ready for the next stage of high growth.
So how do you go about hiring a “great” CFO?
1. Appreciate your business for what it is today
You must understand your strategy before going to market. What are your key goals and company values? Where will a CFO fit in your current organisational structure?
2. Don’t confuse a CFO with a Financial Controller
Which would be more appropriate for your organisation? Every business is unique, look at the growth plans of your company – are you ready for a CFO?
3. The perfect fit for your organisation doesn’t exist
The sooner you learn this the faster you will be able to define what you need or what success looks like for your business. Figure out what your challenges are and what problems you need solved – hire accordingly!
4. Cultural fit
A CFO will be tasked with representing your company both internally and externally. As a face of the organisation it is integral that they fully believe and embrace your culture, values and goals.
5. CFO upgrade?
It’s okay and normal to think about changing your CFO as the company scales, enters new markets, and expands its capital base. Companies growth ambitions and needs change and so does the role of the CFO.

The responses were insightful, with 47% of participants suggesting that 3-5 years is the optimal timeframe ⏳ Interestingly, 27% felt that 1-2 years is sufficient, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.
💡 Top sectors: enterprise software (€127M), health (€116M), and fintech (€71.6M).

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
This recovery signifies a notable turnaround, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the Irish pharmaceutical industry 👏🏼
