6 things to do to enhance your career in 2018

As the Christmas Spirit begins to wane and the grey skies of January start to move in, the New Year brings a great opportunity to take charge of promised changes that may have been put on pause over the Christmas break. Although New Year’s resolutions can be easy in theory, and big statements such as “I’m giving up chocolate” or “I’m making a career move” can be easier to say than do. Below are a number of easy steps designed to help you enhance your career in 2018!
Set Career Goals
Where would you like to see yourself this time next year? What’s the next step for you? Do your research – talk to people who are in the position you would like to be in – how did they get there? Where did they start?
Create a List of Companies and Organisations you would like to work for
Create a list of these companies and do some research into the positions that are currently filled/on offer. Picture yourself in that position and find out which one would suit you the best.
Be Proactive
Think proactively, rather than wishfully – “I will get a job there” instead of “I’d love to work there someday”. Don’t be afraid to approach companies and recruitment agencies to make sure you achieve your goals!
Act Quickly
The New Year brings the opportunity for companies to develop new budgets, implement them and hire accordingly. Companies will also be evaluating their current team and noticing where they fall short and need extra support.
Do Some Personal Admin
Take a look at your CV, your LinkedIn and all your public social platforms – Are they up to scratch? Do they include everything you have experienced and accomplished? When updating your LinkedIn look to previous work colleagues to provide endorsements of your skills. Make sure your CV is tailored to include any results from Projects/Campaigns that may be desirable to your next career step.
Build your Personal Brand
Take advantage of the quiet time in January to keep your LinkedIn active. Liking and sharing content can give people an idea of your personal brand. Taking the initiative to post and blog about what you are passionate about can enhance your presence as an expert in your field, so stop thinking of LinkedIn as an online resume but as a live brand builder.

The responses were insightful, with 47% of participants suggesting that 3-5 years is the optimal timeframe ⏳ Interestingly, 27% felt that 1-2 years is sufficient, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.

Great news from TechIreland! Irish tech start-ups raised nearly €400M in Q2 2024, the best performance since Q2 2022. This is a huge jump from €169M in Q1 and surpasses the €323M raised in the same period last year. In total, €552M was secured by 147 companies in the first half of 2024 🚀
Key highlights:
💡 Series B rounds saw €275M raised by six companies.
💡 Record-breaking growth rounds with major deals for SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3M), Accounts IQ (€60M), GridBeyond (€52 million), Tines (€45 million), and XOcean (€45 million).
💡 Dublin-based companies led with 67% of the total funding.

Ireland's Pharma and Medical industry has bounced back in recent months with a 21% increase in exports this May compared to last year. Major players like Boston Scientific and Thermo Fisher are raising their profit forecasts, due to the growing demand for heart devices and non-urgent surgeries that were postponed during the pandemic 👩🏻⚕️
Boston Scientific announced last year that it would create 400 new jobs in Clonmel and invest €80m in expanding its manufacturing and R&D capabilities. Meanwhile, Thermo Fisher Scientific reported better-than-expected Q2 profits, bolstered by demand for its clinical trial tools and services 📈

Great news for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, the largest employer in East Clare and among the largest in the county, with their announcement of a €10 million investment that underscores their commitment to innovation and growth in the region 👏🏼
The investment will enhance Beckman Coulter’s world-class diagnostics production with the addition of two new fully automated reagent filling lines and upgrades to the site’s infrastructure, boosting both efficiency and capacity.
Beckman Coulter’s economic contribution is highly significant to East Clare and the wider Mid-West region thanks to the 550 plus jobs it provides in its facility. Employment at the site is anticipated to rise to 600 jobs, with headcount figures having almost doubled since 2018 📈

Very positive news for the Pharma sector as the value of Irish exports has grown from €6.2 billion to €72.4 billion in the first four months of 2024. CSO figures show exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased by €3.5 billion (66%) to €8.8 billion in April alone 📈💊
This rebound in Pharma activity is very encouraging given the concerns of a slump last year due to a collapse in demand for Covid vaccines and medications – triggering a downturn in Irish Pharma exports.
This recovery signifies a notable turnaround, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the Irish pharmaceutical industry 👏🏼
