Q&A with Jane Gilsenan

Hi Jane,

Can you tell us a little about your background?

Born and raised in Dublin. I studied Health and Performance Science in UCD followed by a masters in Applied Psychology in UCC.

How long have you been with Mason Alexander?

I joined MA in September so just coming up to the 10-month mark now.

How did you hear about Mason Alexander?

My friend’s brother’s friend worked here before he moved abroad and mentioned that they were hiring about a year ago. A fairly Irish intro to the company.

What does a typical day at MA look like for you?

There is no such thing as a typical day in MA!

What was one thing about the recruitment industry that surprised you the most?

The unpredictability of it – one phone call can change your entire week’s plan.

What kind of person makes the best recruiter?

A real people’s person – just being able to listen and understand what people are looking for. After that it’s just a case of joining the dots.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking for a job in your industry?

I would say to talk to and meet with as many people as you can. You never know what will come from a casual chat and a coffee.

What advice would you give to clients who are looking for the best people?

To be sure to tell interviewers that the interview is a two-way street. Candidates have a lot more choice now than they have in the last number of years. Unemployment levels are the lowest they have been since before the economic crash, so in order to attract the best candidates, a company needs to give a clear picture of the opportunity they are offering the candidate.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

I was recently told by a very successful businesswoman to take up golf and practice as much as possible. It’s one of the most social and enjoyable business outings you can attend, and they often struggle to find women to play.

What opportunities have come your way since joining MA?

I’ve had the chance to meet with some really interesting and successful people and hear their stories. I’ve also become part of the most renowned Social and Sports Committees on Percy Place.

Idea CV – One page or two?

Two pages ideally
